Lunchbox Program kicks off its 13th season with Summer Block Party in Newport

Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is kicking off summer with a Summer Block Party on Thursday, June 26, from 3–6 PM at Gardner Park in Newport. This free, family-friendly event marks the launch of The Lunchbox, GMFTS’s 8-week summer meal program.

Hosted in partnership with Newport Downtown Development, the celebration will include field games, conservation education, and giveaways from over ten community partners, including Old Stone House, Memphremagog Science & Education Center, and North Country Hospital.

Kids 18 and under can enjoy a FREE supper from The Lunchbox food truck, with adult meals available for $8 (cash/check).

Operated in partnership with The Abbey Group, The Lunchbox serves nutritious, locally sourced meals weekly in Irasburg, Barton, and Newport. As a participant in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), The Lunchbox provides around 4,000 free meals to children each summer.

In addition to meals, The Lunchbox offers enrichment programming including arts & crafts, food education, and a Market Basket table with free produce and recipes featuring local, seasonal ingredients. As one participant shared, “The Lunchbox allows myself and my children to try new foods, socialize, and fill our bellies.”

The Lunchbox runs from June 24 through August 14, with weekly stops from 11 AM to 1 PM at:

  • Tuesdays – Leach Public Library, Irasburg

  • Wednesdays – Barton Public Library

  • Thursdays – Gardner Memorial Park, Newport (*no lunch service in Newport on June 26th)

“We’re excited to bring back the Block Party as a way to promote The Lunchbox and other local resources. It’s a celebration of community!” says Hilary Rosa, GMFTS Food Access Coordinator. “Whether you’re looking for a meal, something fun to do, or just want to try new foods—The Lunchbox has something for everyone.”

This event is made possible thanks to sponsorship from The Abbey Group, Community National Bank, and other generous community businesses. View the full sponsor list and Lunchbox schedule at: gmfts.org
