Newport Downtown Development (NDD) is supporting a robust program of bicycling activities this summer. In addition to the long-standing bicycle rides hosted by Kingdom Games, there will be a series of education and encouragement events throughout the summer.
On Saturday, June 1, Goodrich Library will have a Bikes & Books Storytime, 10:30am – Noon. Our local bicycle advocate and safe cycling instructor will read her favorite bike-themed picture books and then offer instruction on riding a running bike. A running bike, also called a strider, is a bicycle with no pedals. Children as young as two years old can learn how to run and stride, teaching them balance. Striders are considered the best way for children to learn how to ride a bike. Strider bikes and helmets will be available.
On Friday, June 7, NDD is hosting a Seniors & Cycling 101 workshop. This two-hour class is designed for older adults who need a little encouragement for getting back on the bike, or just want to learn more about safe cycling principles. The first hour will be in a classroom, learning about vehicular cycling and other tips for enjoying bicycling adventures. The second hour will be on bikes, either in the gym or on the bike path. The event will be held at the Newport Municipal Building, 10am-noon. RSVP is requested to ncdd.events@gmail.com
Other educational and encouragement events planned for the summer include safe cycling classes specifically for women and tips for bicycle commuting, as well as group rides, E-bike and adaptive bicycle demos, Learn to Ride events for children, and Bike in Movie Nights downtown.
All of the cycling classes and events are free and will be led by a local bicycle advocate and certified safe cycling instructor who joins our community with extensive teaching experience under her wheels. For more information, visit: www.discovernewportvt.com/biking/
