SUMMARY:The Moose
DESCRIPTION:We gather at Mike’s Tiki Bar at 8 am with a start at 8:30 am. We head north up Route 114 through Island Pond to Bloomfield\, then up one of the most beautiful and serene stretches of the Connecticut River before heading back through Canaan\, Norton and Island Pond and on to East Burke. \nThe Moose offers miles and miles of wide open riding\, on some of the most “car hungry” roads in Vermont. This is not a sanctioned race. As a “timed event” you must stop at all stop signs and obey traffic lights. But\, hey\, there are only three stop signs in the entire 103 miles of riding. As for traffic lights – nadda\, niente. And yes\, you must yield to oncoming traffic at your left hand turns. But what’s this? There are only three of them in all 103 miles.

SUMMARY:In Search Of Memphre
DESCRIPTION: \nIn Search of Memphre is a 25-mile international swim on Lake Memphremagog between Newport\, Vermont and Magog\, Quebec. This amateur swim was started in 2011 on the tenth anniversary of 9/11\, in part to promote a more open border with our Canadian friends and to search for our elusive\, swimmer friendly\, lake creature\, Memphre. \nIt has expanded and evolved to include several three-day windows throughout June\, July\, August and September. Up to two swimmers are allowed in each window. \nAll swimmers must have swum at least 25 km in under 10 hours and 30 minutes\, unless special arrangements are made for slow but strong swimmers. They are also required to have at least three hours of nighttime\, open water swimming experience. \nWe offer one of two pontoon boats with pilots or a 16-foot motorized wooden dory with pilot for support. Swimmer is responsible for providing a crew member. We can find crew for an additional fee. Kayaks and kayakers are no longer used/ \nBase fee in 2024 is $2\,950 for boat and pilot with $500 deposit at time of registration. Remainder is due on March 1\, 2024. We can provide a crew member for an additional $500. \nWe establish three-day windows and pick the very best of the three. We leave from The EastSide Restaurant anytime between 12:01 am and 5:30 am on one of the three days. Swimmers and crew are REQUIRED to arrive in Newport by late afternoon two days before the first day of the window\, and not plan their return home until at least the day after the last day of the window.

SUMMARY:Symposium on Cyanobacteria/blue-green algae
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday\, July 24th\, at the Gateway Center\, 84 Fyfe Dr. Newport\, Vermont\, for a symposium on Cyanobacteria/blue-green algae. We will be joined by a group of experts to discuss the “good\, the bad\, and the ugly” of cyanobacteria and what it means to each of us. \nCyanobacteria\, also known as “blue green algae\,” is a major public concern\, especially with increasing warmer temperatures and nutrient loading into Vermont lakes and ponds. Being informed about cyanobacteria blooms and the potential environmental and health impacts is critical as we venture into our lakes and ponds this summer. \nJoin us at the Cyanobacteria Symposium to learn more about both the historical and current issues that cause the cyanobacteria blooms. This symposium is an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of experts in the field of cyanobacteria. Topics will include what cyanobacteria is\, how have our historical and current land use trends led to the current issues with cyanobacteria\, and what are the drivers of nutrient loading that has led to more frequent algae blooms? Impacts of climatic change and extreme weather events\, as well as health effects will be discussed. We will wrap up with a look at methods for stormwater management and mitigation of nutrient loading. \nDr. Peter Isles and Ben Copans of Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation will be joining with Dr. Andrew Schroth and Dr. Mindy Morales-Williams of UVM Rubenstein School of Environmental and Natural Resources to discuss the evolution of cyanobacteria\, nutrient loading\, climatic change\, and methods for managing the causes of cyanobacteria blooms. Dr. Kathy Cottingham from Dartmouth College will address the historical and land use trends correlation. Bridget O’Brien of the Vermont Department of Health will provide insight into the toxicity impacts to humans and animals. Memphremagog Watershed Association board member and Sterling College professor\, Farley Brown\, will moderate the discussion. \nThe Cyanobacteria Symposium is hosted by the Memphremagog Watershed Association\, and will take place at the Gateway Center\, 84 Fyfe Drive\, Newport Vermont. Doors will open at 5:00 Presentation will begin at 6:30. Come early and enjoy complimentary refreshments. Virtual attendance will also be available. A link below. \nFor more information\, contact Mary Pat Goulding at marypat@mwavt.org or 802-334-2444
