SUMMARY:CROSS-BORDER POETRY
DESCRIPTION:STANSTEAD\, QC / DERBY LINE\, VT — Eighteen acclaimed poets from Canada and Vermont will gather for Cross-Border Poetry on Saturday\, October 10\, 2026\, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the historic Haskell Opera House. \nSponsored by the Centre des Arts de Stanstead\, this major one-day literary event will celebrate the longstanding friendship between the neighbouring communities of Stanstead\, Quebec\, and Derby Line\, Vermont. \nThe afternoon will feature three poetry sessions\, with breaks offering audience members an opportunity to meet the writers\, enjoy refreshments and browse books available for purchase. The participating poets include Vermont Poet Laureates\, as well as winners and finalists for the Griffin Poetry Prize\, the Vermont Book Award\, the Governor General’s Literary Awards and other major honours. \nFeatured Poets \n\n\n\n\nLiz Howard \n\n\nChard deNiord \n\n\nKatharine Whitcomb \n\n\n\n\nJohn Wall Barger \n\n\nKathleen Winter \n\n\nSharon Darrow \n\n\n\n\nLouise Abbott \n\n\nAngela Leuck \n\n\nSteve Luxton \n\n\n\n\nChantal Ringuet \n\n\nLarry Bradley \n\n\nStephanie Bolster \n\n\n\n\nJean-Blaise Bourque \n\n\nGillian Sze \n\n\nSarah Wolfson \n\n\n\n\nstephanie roberts \n\n\nJeremy Audet \n\n\nMichael Metivier \n\n\n\n\nA Building That Unites Two Countries \nPurposefully constructed across the international boundary\, the Haskell Free Library and Opera House has served the people of Stanstead and Derby Line for more than a century. The border runs directly through the building\, making the Haskell an enduring symbol of cooperation\, friendship and shared cultural life. \nThe remarkable relationship between the two communities was documented in the National Film Board of Canada’s 1955 film Two Countries\, One Street. In 2016\, U.S. President Barack Obama also cited the Haskell as an example of the close bonds shared by Canadians and Americans. \nThat tradition faced a challenge in 2025\, when long-established access through the building’s American entrance was restricted for Canadian visitors. The decision followed a January visit by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem\, during which\, according to accounts given to CTV News\, she referred to Canada as “the 51st state” while crossing the boundary inside the building. \nThe community responded with an extraordinary display of solidarity. A fundraising campaign was launched to create a permanent Canadian entrance\, attracting more than $100\,000 in its first 48 hours. Bestselling Canadian author Louise Penny contributed an additional $50\,000 to the project. The completed entrance was celebrated with an official opening in June 2026. \nAt a time when borders can be used to divide\, Cross-Border Poetry will affirm the values the Haskell has embodied throughout its history: openness\, friendship\, creativity and mutual respect. \n“The Haskell Free Library and Opera House embodies what is best in our region of the world\,” the organizers said. “We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the values that have united these two communities for generations.” \nEvent Information \nEvent: Cross-Border Poetry \nDate: Saturday\, October 10\, 2026 \nTime: 1:00–5:00 p.m. \nVenue: Haskell Opera House\, Derby Line\, Vermont / Stanstead\, Quebec \nU.S. entrance: 93 Caswell Avenue\, Derby Line\, VT 05830 \nCanadian entrance: 1 Rue Church\, Stanstead\, QC \nSponsor: Centre des Arts de Stanstead \ncentredesartsdestanstead.com  •  haskelloperahouse.org \nMedia Contacts \nGabriel Safdie\nFounder\, Centre des Arts de Stanstead\n514-249-7599   | gabrielsafdie@gmail.com \ncentredesartsdestanstead@gmail.com \nDerek Webster\nEvent Organizer\n514-779-7356  |  derekwebster@me.com\nderekwebsterwriter.com
