Event Recap: 15th Annual Dandelion Run Exceeds Expectations

May 22, 2023

Despite gloomy weather forecasts, the 15th Annual Dandelion Run, affectionately known as “The Dandy,” was graced with clear, sunny skies this past Saturday. The cool running conditions, combined with the fields adorned with the event’s signature dandelions, made for an ideal setting for the anticipated event.

About 135 enthusiastic participants turned up for the festivities, ready to run, walk, and engage in what turned out to be a lively, memorable day. Local musicians were strategically positioned along the route, contributing to the ambiance with a variety of musical flavors ranging from bagpipes to string bands.

Featured performers included Wayne Hankin, Patti Casey, Tom MacKenzie, and Bob Dunn. The eclectic mix of music brought joy to the participants as they traversed the scenic course. Many couldn’t resist the allure of dancing along to the vibrant tunes.

Orr Ashenberg of Cambridge, MA, and Kristen Lande of Richford, NH, took top honors in the half marathon, finishing with impressive times of 1:38:28 and 1:45:37, respectively.

In the 10 km category, Newport’s own Nicholas Monty, 37, narrowly outpaced George Kominos, 66, while in the women’s division, Sacha Peeler, 45, outlasted Jessica Boucher, 39.

The 4-mile race saw victories from youth runner McKenna Flint, 9, and adult runner Nick Brown, 26.

This event truly epitomizes inclusivity, as evidenced by the 1 and 2-mile races. Participants ranging from the youngest, 3-year-olds Sam Credit and Ophelia Goulet, to the oldest, 83-year-old Annette Pion, each had their moment in the spotlight as they claimed their prizes.

The coveted “Last One Back to the Barn” award, celebrating perseverance and grit, was proudly earned by Michelle Floyd, 47, from Erie, Colorado.

As always, the Dandelion Run was a showcase of community spirit. Families ran together, and local businesses were well represented by teams of enthusiastic employees.

Community National Bank, the main sponsor, supplied prizes and treats including maple syrup, beef jerky, and a goody bag from Louis Garneau.

Amidst the celebrations, participants took a moment to remember Terri Weed, who tragically lost her life in the Town of Morgan on May 21, 1981.

The Dandelion Run raised a total of $1,250 for Umbrella, an organization advocating for victims of violence, and an additional $500 for Siskin-Coutts.

Marking the arrival of spring, symbolizing community resilience, and celebrating the pure joy of running, the Dandelion Run is much more than just a race.

Enthusiasts, mark your calendars – the 16th Annual Dandelion Run is slated for May 19, 2024. We can’t wait to see you there!
