the newport area

Even more to explore.

Inevitably, what makes a space feel, at the same time, both unique and welcoming are the special events, unexplored corners, places to gather and spaces to roam that give a community its personality.

The Newport area is home to parks with short views to the lake and long views to our mountains, spaces that turn from ice rink in the winter to skate park in the summer, beautiful lake side camping, walking, biking and cross-country ski trails, and homespun events designed to bring both our community and visitors together during each of our four distinctly breathtaking seasons.

Newport City Recreation Department

Newport Parks & Recreation

The mission of Newport Parks & Recreation is to provide the citizens of Newport and visitors with year long selections of high quality recreational opportunities through facilities and programs and to enhance the quality of life for all ages.

Gardner Park Winter Ice Rinks

From December to March, locals and visitors flock to Gardner Park and the “Skate Shack” to enjoy beautiful ice rinks, free skate rentals, hot cocoa and restrooms. The park features 3 separate ice surfaces connected by frozen skating paths. The contained Hockey Rink is open for casual stick and puck while the Rec Rink on the south end offers public skating. Weather permitting, open areas and trails on the lake are also maintained for natural skating in the bay.

Prouty Beach

Prouty Beach is a 36-acre park with breathtaking views of Lake Memphremagog and Downtown Newport. The facility hosts over 75 campsites and amenities including tennis courts, playground, disc golf course, basketball court, shuffleboard and horseshoe pits. Located conveniently off I-91 across from North Country Union High School and less than one mile from Main Street Newport, the park is a local favorite for day use and over-night stays. The lower beach building houses boat and bike rentals and access to bathrooms and changing facilities for the waterfront. Prouty also provides parking areas for hiking and biking on the Newport-Beebe Bike Path and nearby fishing areas inside the park.

Crystal State Park

The beach area has almost a mile of sandy shoreline with a marked swimming area. The large historic granite bathhouse has rest rooms, changing areas, and a concession stand. There are approximately 40 free standing charcoal grills, nearly 80 picnic tables, play areas, rental boats and canoes, and lots of parking spaces.

Brighton State Park

Located on the shores of Spectacle Pond. The outstanding attraction of this area is its remoteness: mountains with tree-covered slopes, fast running streams, and clear lakes. It is common to hear loons calling at night. The wild lands to the northeast and southeast of the town of Island Pond are suited to the angler, the hunter, or the outdoor lover who likes to roam away from developed roads or towns. Logging roads into the deeper reaches of this area offer adventurous side trips.

Arnold’s Rescue Center

Arnolds Rescue Center, the northern branch of Arnolds Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue Center, is a refuge for homeless or displaced horses and donkeys on 90 acres in Brownington, Vermont.
