Eagle Point Wetland Paddle Announced

May 8, 2023

Are you looking for a fun summer activity that will get you out on the water and up close with nature? Consider joining a guided paddle on Eagle Point Wildlife Management Area in Derby, Vermont.

Led by Paul Hamelin from the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife, this paddle will take you through nearly a mile of lakeshore habitat, giving you the opportunity to see a variety of wetland and marsh species, including herons, bitterns, snipe, pied-billed grebes, rails, common moorhens, and marsh wrens.

The paddle is scheduled for June 17, with a rain date of June 18. Participants will need to bring their own paddle craft and gear, including a personal flotation device.

Basic paddling skills for flat water are required. The event is limited to 10 boats, so make sure to register early to secure a spot.

If you register but cannot make it, please let the organizers know so they can give your spot to someone on the waiting list.

The parking situation is limited, so plan ahead. Paddlers will need to drop off their boat before the Halls Creek bridge and then relocate their vehicle to the Wetland Overlook parking area on the hill across the bridge.

There is a shared parking zone only on one side of the road between the wetland and lake, and the narrow parking space is popular with anglers so space is limited.

More parking is available at the Dunn Farm Road parking area, with carpool back to the launch site.

If you’re looking for a unique way to experience Vermont’s natural beauty, this guided paddle is not to be missed.

So grab your paddle craft and gear, and get ready to explore Eagle Point Wildlife Management Area with a knowledgeable guide and a group of fellow nature enthusiasts.
