The streets of downtown Newport are a little more vibrant today, thanks to the completion of the inaugural Glimpses of Wonder public art installation. This exciting new initiative, spearheaded by Newport Downtown Development, aims to pepper the city center with small-scale, unique artworks—and the first piece, a strikingly painted fire hydrant, has already ignited conversation and curiosity.
Created by local artist Paloma Valenta, the project’s debut installation is a burst of color and creativity on what was once an overlooked piece of city infrastructure. This transformation reflects the Glimpses of Wonder vision: turning the mundane into a source of unexpected joy and artistic discovery.
While public art often sparks lively discussion, this installation’s purpose is to inspire residents and visitors to see the community through a fresh lens. Officially approved by the City Council in early July, the project represents a shared commitment to enriching Newport’s public spaces. It’s not just about decorating an object—it’s about celebrating the talent of local artists, encouraging exploration, and fostering a collective sense of pride and joy in the heart of the community.
The project is made possible through the generous support of community sponsor NorthCountry Federal Credit Union, whose partnership underscores a commitment to the arts and local revitalization. This first installation is only the beginning. The Newport Downtown Development team invites everyone to see the inaugural Glimpse of Wonder in person and to watch for more pieces in the coming months, as downtown transforms into an evolving, interactive art gallery.
