about newport
A place to live, work and play.
What is it about a space that makes you feel at home? Here in Newport Vermont we’ve been blessed with both the natural attributes of deep lakes, wide skies and rugged mountains but also with a forward looking, energized community working hard to develop and refine a space we’re proud of that we all can all live, work and play.
These natural attributes lend themselves to a vibrant Outdoor Recreation Economy with lakes and rivers to paddle, swim and sail, mountains to hike and ski, cross country trails to ski and bike across, as well as events, attractions and programs that appeal to a wide range of weekend vacationers or multi-generational locals.
Along with what we’ve inherited through our geography in Newport, the community has worked hard on projects like receiving State of Vermont Official Downtown Designation status, and making our streets safe, welcoming and attractive to our community. We’ve also received an AARP Age Friendly Community designation underlining our focus on creating a community that is safe, secure and vibrant for residents of all ages and incomes.
And to help spread success and vibrancy across our community, our Newport City Downtown Development board is constantly looking for ways to promote, accentuate and support the business community that is the shopping, dining and attraction hub for every size and stripe of local, vacationer or visitor to our region. Our Downtown Dollars Program, a plan to help support local businesses and motivate our locals to explore corners sometimes hidden even to them, is emblematic of our belief that our community thrives only when those who live here focus on contributing to its success.
Ultimately, what makes Newport special, is not only the beauty that stops us everywhere we look, but the people who live here, their bootstrap mentality to getting things done and their willingness to welcome others into what we feel is the most special corner of the state. We hope as you poke around our website, you’ll feel some spark of what turned us into locals and, in many cases, why many of us never left.
We hope to welcome you soon.
