The Great Maple Syrup Bubble: Greensboro Historical Society Presentation and Annual Meeting
Monday, August 4 at 7:00pm
at the Fellowship Hall of the UCC in Greensboro
The Greensboro Historical Society invites you to our Annual Meeting featuring a presentation by historian Tim Breen. His topic, “The Great Maple Syrup Bubble,” reconstructs a lost 18th-century world of social reformers and ambitious entrepreneurs.
During that time, many Americans began openly criticizing the enslavement of Africans, particularly in the Caribbean Islands, where the majority of household sugar was manufactured. As a way to undermine this cruel trade, people in northern cities argued that large-scale production of maple syrup might cut demand for cane sugar.
Come learn more about this sobering story of good intentions, erroneous agricultural advice, and unfavorable geography.
All are welcome! Maple refreshments will be served. Bring your questions and curiosity.
