As the Orleans County Seat, Newport VT is a hub for state agencies (Dept of Motor Vehicles, Department of Labor, Agency for Health & Human Services) and county and federal courts for Orleans and northern Essex Counties. The Orleans County Sheriff deparment is located in Newport as well as the Newport City Police Department, Newport Fire Department and Newport Ambulance Service. The North Country Supervisory Union (13 school districts plus the North Country High School and Career Center and Junior High School) is headquartered in Newport as well as the award-winning North Country Hospital.
